The Certification Process
Becoming Waste Free Certified is a collaborative process that provides businesses with hands-on guidance and tools to meet sustainability goals. Each participating business will receive a tailored roadmap to help reduce waste, improve composting practices, and track progress. Here’s how the certification journey unfolds:
1. Initial Contact & Scheduling
- We conduct a phone or in-person consultation.
- Schedule a visit to your site.
- Collect initial data.
2. Composting Set-up & Pickup
We’re excited to collaborate with Grower’s Best Organics & Worm Farm and Green Thumbs Recycling to offer a compost pickup service.
- Pickup containers: 5-gallon buckets for small businesses and homeowners, larger pallets for high-volume businesses (like Costco)
- Pickup frequency: Every other week for homes and small businesses
- Storage: Compostables should be frozen or kept cool
- Sawdust: Provided upon request to manage smell and compost quality
- Health code considerations: Vary based on food volume—restaurants will be evaluated case-by-case
3. Program Requirements & Tools
We’ve developed a full toolkit to make certification seamless, including:
- Communication templates for outreach
- Tracking forms for business engagement and recruitment
- Scheduling and calendar systems with embedded tasks
- Program overview and inventory sheets
- Step-by-step checklist for certification
- Official Waste Free Certified Certificate, co-signed by:
- Periodic check-ins to verify continued compliance and support.
4. Data & Impact Tracking
We have developed tools to monitor:
- Landfill diversion metrics
- Compliance rates

This data will be integrated into a mobile app to support businesses in tracking their waste reduction progress in real time.
